What wallpaper removal costs
Wallpaper removal is priced by the room after the first test strip, because the test tells us whether the paper is a half day or two days. The estimate lists stripping, wall repair and paint as separate lines. No finished wallpaper job is on the public price list yet, so the estimate carries the number.

What moves the price
- How it was hung is the cost. Paper over primed walls comes off clean. Paper over bare drywall takes the drywall face with it and the room needs a skim coat.
- Layers add time. Two or three layers of paper in an old Baltimore rowhome is a two day strip.
- Painted over wallpaper is the slow one. The paint seals the paper, so every inch has to be scored before the steamer works.
- Paint is a separate line. Most people want the room painted once the walls are smooth, and we price that with it.

Cost questions
- Can you just paint over the wallpaper?
- We can, and we usually tell you not to. Seams show through, and the next person who strips it has a worse job. If the paper is tight and smooth we will say so and give you both prices.
- How long does a powder room take?
- Usually one day to strip and wash, a second to skim and prime if the walls need it, and a third for paint. Easy paper over primed walls can strip and paint in two days.
- Will the walls be smooth after?
- Yes. Any torn face gets skimmed and sanded. We check the walls with a work light held at an angle before primer, which is how the bumps get found.
How the work itself goes is on the wallpaper removal page.
